Gujarat is a popular tourist destination for visitors from all over the world, as it is home to one of the world's largest white deserts, the country's longest coastline, the largest habitat of Asian lions and the first marine national park from India. There is so much to see in this state that even a month off wouldn't be enough, but that doesn't stop us from continuing to explore new places.
The enchanting natural beauty, historical monuments, remains of ancient civilizations and picturesque beaches exert a charm that is difficult to break away from. You can enjoy the unique folk dances and absolutely delicious dishes of the state. The best time to visit Gujarat is from June to March. The state is very well connected to all major cities and towns in the country. The official language spoken is Gujarati. However, you will also find people speaking Hindi and English.
Main attractions of Gujarat
1. Junagadh
The town is famous for Gir National Park, which is the largest habitat of the fearsome Asian lions and is also home to over 300 species of birds, such as the crested serpent eagle, eagle owl and other members of the feline family such as leopards. The national park is also famous for its cheese makers (silk cotton trees). The best time to visit Gir National Park is between March and May. Jeep safari and jungle safari are among the most exciting ways to explore the park. Near Gir National Park are Kankai Mata Temple and Tulishyam Hot Springs. Other major tourist attractions include the Girnar Hills, Damodar Kund, Mahabat Maqbara and Uperkot Fort.
2. Dwarka
Also known as the "Golden City", this city has religious and historical significance and is among the sacred cities. Dwarka was the ancient kingdom of Lord Krishna and the very first capital of the state of Gujarat. After Lord Krishna disappeared, Dwarka was submerged by water and rebuilt several times afterward. Located on the banks of the Gomati River, Dwarkadish Temple is decorated with garlands of flowers and fairy lights during the Krishna Janmashtami festival. Rukmini Devi Temple, Beyt Dwarka Temple, Lighthouse near Gomti Ghat, Somnath Temple, Gopi Talav and Samudra Narayan Temple are the main attractions that will give you a complete experience of this magical city.
3. Kutch – Bhuj
Kutch is a paradise for cultural tourists and feels like a unique land. 73 kilometers from Kutch is Bhuj, which offers a real insight into Kutch tourism. Kutch Desert Wildlife Sanctuary, Hill Garden, Kutch Grand Rann — white salt desert where camel safaris can be taken — Aaina Mahal, Pirotan Island, Shri Swaminarayan Temple, Lake Hamirsar, Mata no Madh, Prag Mahal, Narayan Sarovar Shrine, Kala Dungar, Kutch Museum, Vijay Vilas Palace, camel rides on Mandvi Beach, visits to craft villages, Indian Wild Donkey Sanctuary, Bhadreshwar Jain Temple, Kandla Harbour, Dholavira and Great Indian Bustard Sanctuary are the main tourist attractions.
4. Vadodara
Located on the banks of the Vishwamitri River, Vadodara, also known as Baroda, is one of the most popular towns in the state of Gujarat. Laxmi Vilas Palace covers over 700 acres. Although it is still the residence of the Vadodara royal family, it is open to the public and is one of the most famous tourist spots in Gujarat. The Maharaj Fateh Singh Museum, Sayaji Bagh —a large, well-appointed park— as well as the museum and art gallery are worth a visit. Other major attractions include Aurobindo Ashram, Zarwani Waterfalls, Jambughoda Wildlife Sanctuary, Dakor, S Cube Water Park, peaceful Kabirwad Island for nature lovers and Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park.
5. Saputara
The state has a hill station called Saputara, which provides a cool and relaxing retreat. Rose Garden, Mahal Forest, Lake Garden, Gandhi Shikhar, Terraced Garden, Honey Bee Center, Gira Waterfalls and Sunrise Point are the most visited tourist attractions. You will feel a real breath of fresh air there. Other attractions include the nautical club, artisan village, tribal museum and cable car. #6. Gandhinagar
The capital of Gujarat is also home to magnificent temples and a large number of renowned universities. Akshardham Temple, built with 6,000 tons of pink sandstone, Adlaj Step Well, Gujarat Science City, Indroda Dinosaur and Fossil Park, Pethapur known as Artisans Village, Trimandir, Hanuman Temple, Mahudi Jain Temple and Children's Park are the main tourist attractions.
7. Ahmedabad
A city with a glorious past, Ahmedabad is one of the most important places in Gujarat. Jama Mosque, Siddi Sayed Mosque, Sabarmati Ashram, Sarkhej Roza, Kankaria Lake, Kamla Nehru Zoological Garden, Hutheesing Jain Temple, Jagannath Temple, Sabarmati Riverfront, Calico Textile Museum, Auto World Vintage Car Automobile Museum and Pols are the main tourist attractions.
8. Rajkot

9. Patan
Founded by King Vanraj Chavda in 745 AD, Patan was attacked by Mahmud of Ghazni in 1024. Patan is famous for its sumptuous hand-woven Patola saris. Rani Ki Vav, built by Queen Udyamati of the Solanki Dynasty, is one of India's architectural masterpieces, notable for its intricate designs and abundant religious ornaments. Sahastralinga Talav, Khan Sarovar, Hemachandracharya Gyan Mandir and Panchasara Parshvanath Jain Derasar are the main tourist attractions.
10. Bhavnagar
Bhavnagar is a living testimony to a rich Rajput culture and an even more prosperous port city, offering magnificent landscapes. GauriShankar Lake, Nilambag Palace, Victoria Park, Gopnath Beach, Barton Library and Museum, Gandhi Smriti, Palitana Jain Temple and Velavadar Blackbuck National Park are the main tourist attractions.
11. Lothal
It is a major site of the Indus Valley Civilization excavated in India. You can visit the museum located at the entrance to the site, which displays 5,089 objects unearthed during excavations, such as replicas of seals and prints, terracotta ornaments, tools and pottery, objects in shell and ivory, copper and bronze objects, animal and human figurines, weights, etc., in order to better understand the history of the place. This place is exclusively for history buffs.
Gujarat's hidden attractions
1. Modhera
Located in Mehsana district, the peaceful village of Modhera is home to one of India's most important solar temples. Built in the 11th century, the temple is dedicated to Surya, the Sun god. The sanctuary is designed to receive the first rays of the morning sun during the equinoxes. The Suryakund or stepwell, the prayer room supported by 52 pillars and another room leading to the inner shrine called Garbhagriha are particularly worth a visit. The Modhera dance festival is also very unique.
2. Gulmohar Greens – Golf and Country Club Ltd

3. Polo Monument and Vijaynagar Forest

If you don't want to hike, you can take a private bus or taxi from Ahmedabad. On the other hand, if you want to hike in the forest, take a jeep from Sabarkantha, located 56 km from Vijaynagar, which will take you to the Polo camp. From there, you will have to walk in the forest to explore the temples. You will only find one homestay in Vijaynagar.
4. Jamnagar
Jamnagar is a paradise for ocean lovers. Home to India's first marine sanctuary and the world's largest oil refinery, this district is iconic in both its past and present. The Marine National Park, Khijadiya Bird Sanctuary, Sivrajpur Beach and Pratap Vilas Palace are the main tourist attractions.
5. Banaskantha
Located on the border of Gujarat and Rajasthan, Shri Arasuri Ambaji Mata Temple is one of the Shaktipeethas and a major religious site in Gujarat. The temple is decorated with lights and flowers during the Bhadrapad Purnima and Navratri festivals. Manasarovar is a nearby site to visit.
6. Shamlaji Temple
Located in Aravalli district, Shamlaji Temple is considered one of the most important shrines dedicated to the juvenile form of Krishna. Near the temple flows the Meshwo River. The imposing temple is strikingly beautiful thanks to the impressive patterns of its walls. The idols of Gadadhar, Vasudev and Krishna (different incarnations of Krishna) are worshiped there. From Ahmedabad, a direct train provides access.

Navratri, celebrated every year in October; the Rann Utsav festival, organized between November and February at the Rann in Kutch; Shamlaji Melo, organized around the month of November; Vautha Mela, a five-day wildlife trade festival taking place during the full moon of the month of Kartik in the Hindu calendar (November); the International Kite Festival (Uttarayan) on the occasion of Makar Sankranti; the Modhera Dance Festival celebrated every year during the third week of January; the Bhavnath Mahadev Fair, a five-day festival dedicated to Lord Shiva during Maha Shivratri; the Rath Yatra of Jagannath Temple celebrated in June or July; Janmashtami celebrated in August; and Bhadra Purnima Fair at Ambaji Temple in Banaskantha are very unique festivals in Gujarat.
Whichever festival you choose to attend in Gujarat, you can soak up the Gujarat atmosphere, as this state has beautifully preserved its legacy of the past.
